#NikkeiTogether

After the whirlwind of Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is your chance to refocus on giving back—locally and globally. On this day, communities come together to support causes that bring purpose.

This Giving Tuesday, December 3rd, we invite you to join #NikkeiTogether, a campaign supporting our two partner organizations:

  • Nikkei Seniors Health Care & Housing Society: Providing supportive and independent housing, as well as compassionate care programs, to help seniors live with dignity and thrive in their community.

  • Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre: Honouring and preserving the history and heritage of Japanese Canadians while promoting Japanese culture and traditions in Canada.

At the Nikkei Place Foundation, our mission is to ensure the long-term sustainability of two vital organizations. We focus on raising donations, running impactful campaigns, and growing the Nikkei Place Endowment Fund to ensure that Nikkei Place remains self-sustaining for generations to come.

Why Your Support Matters:

Your donations play a vital role in preserving history, support our elders, educating future generations, and celebrating culture. Here’s what your support makes possible:

  • Caring for Seniors: Help create a community where seniors thrive. Your support sustains programs that promote health, social connection, and joy, ensuring our elders live with dignity and purpose. From wellness activities such as boxing and yoga to social events like barbecue lunch day or at-home obento delivery, these programs provide the care and support seniors deserve.

“All seems well with the bento delivery to Arthur. He suffers from dementia so it takes a little prodding until he can recall having the bento. That is a nice bento bako! Once recalled, he remembers that he has had gohan, sometimes fish, other ‘okazu’ of vegetables. My impression is that the o-bento meal is a pleasant diversion for Arthur. It is very different from his regular Rosewood menu. I hope your service continues. He is fortunate to be a recipient. Please extend our thanks to each who contribute in someway to this program.”

  • Preservation of Archives: Help us protect a treasure trove of history, including over 59,500 photographs and digital images, 54.6 meters of textual records, 1,500 library books, 677 oral history records, 191 film reels, and 3,225 artworks and artifacts.

  • Educational Programs: Support programs that have reached over 1,817 participants, teaching about the lives of Japanese Canadians before, during, and after the internment. These programs also celebrate Japanese culture through hands-on experiences like Karate, Origami, and Kimono dressing, fostering deeper understanding and appreciation.

  • Cultural Events and Activities: Keep our vibrant community alive with special events such as Nikkei Matsuri, gallery openings, and Mochitsuki. Your support also sustains ongoing cultural programs like Taiko drumming, martial arts, karaoke, traditional dances, and our Japanese bookstore, which bring people together and celebrate the richness of Japanese heritage.

"The Japanese gardens offer a calm and peacefull setting for enjoying lunch or reading a book. The community centre offers tea ceremony or flower arranging or dance and cooking classes and sometimes Japanese films. There is a lovely little gift shop which offers hand made clothing or pottery and Japanese cultural books and cards. The museum next door offers various exhibits on the history of Japanese people who settled in BC."

Your donations can go to these two incredible organizations, ensuring a lasting impact on the lives of seniors while also fostering the preservation, celebration, and promotion of Japanese Canadian history and culture. By supporting, you help ensure that the stories of resilience, perseverance, and culture are passed on to future generations. Together, we can strengthen our community and honour a legacy that connects generations.
