This award is named after Thomas Shoyama — one of Canada’s most respected civil servants, who helped create the universal health care system as a deputy minister for Tommy Douglas.
This award is presented to an individual who has played a foundational role in their life as a leader in Canada and in the Japanese and Japanese Canadian community.

The Nikkei Youth Athletics Bursary is a $1,000 bursary that recognizes the achievements of Canadian Nikkei youth student-athletes who foster excellence in sports, academics and community leadership.
It aims to support and encourage youth engagement in their community and the building of healthy communities through athletics.
