Nikkei Place Charity Golf Day raises over $130,000 for dementia-friendly programs!
On Friday, May 27, 2022, Nikkei Place Foundation and Nikkei Seniors Health Care & Housing Society hosted the Nikkei Place Charity Golf Day at Riverway Golf Course in Burnaby! Every dollar raised at the event helps fund dementia-friendly outreach programs run by Nikkei Seniors Health Care & Housing Society. Read more about the programs that are supported by this event here.
It was the first Nikkei Place golf event in two years due to the pandemic. Despite being smaller in scale, our sponsors and supporters rallied for our cause, and enabled us to exceed our fundraising goals!
We raised over $66,000 in net proceeds before DOUBLING it to over $130,000 thanks to our matching donors Ken & Junko Shinozaki!
The 2022 Golf Committee greatly appreciates the tremendous generosity of all our sponsors, donors, golfers and volunteers for answering the call to Beat the Odds of Dementia! Together we are changing the lives of seniors for the better.
This funding helps to bring dementia-friendly programs to seniors and caregivers that need them. Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society had to shut down during the pandemic and reimagine how to do community lead in-person programs. Through enhancing technology and upgrading the internet, we introduced hybrid virtual programming — a combination of in-person and virtual participants. The return of our "Iki Iki (Lively, Lively)" social day program was welcomed with open arms. This program consists of a delivered bento box, exercise, art class and chat time.
We have always taken pride in our dementia-friendly Outreach and Activities programs. Hybrid programming has helped seniors feel less isolated as participants make more connections with fellow seniors. These programs help seniors live a more extended, more fulfilled lifestyle.
OpenRoad Honda Middlegate Team
It was a sold out day with 104 golfers, door prizes, and various on course activities and tents. Special thanks to our honoured guests Mayor of Burnaby Mike Hurley, Councillor James Wang, Consul General of Japan Takashi Hatori, and Global BC Meteorologist Yvonne Schalle for joining us!
This year we were delighted to welcome new sponsors Kinetic Wireless Rogers & Samsung, who hosted a smartphone giveaway and phone protectors, and Joe Fortes, who provided delicious appetizers at the 19th Hole!
Back by popular demand was the Caesar Station hosted by The Keg Steakhouse, and team photo op sponsored by Bosa Properties! All team photos can be viewed on the golf website.
We also wish to thank the City of Burnaby for their support, and our other executive sponsors Fujiya, Anthem Properties, Appia, Strand Development and Leon Judah Blackmore Foundation, and premium sponsor Kami Insurance for their vital support!
Tournament, Contest & Door Prize Winners
Congratulations to the winning team Randy Koyanagi, Ken Nishi, Al Koyanagi, and Perry Nishihata!
We also had many door prize and on-course contest winners. All prize winners are contacted individually, and their names have been posted to our website seniors.nikkeiplace.org/golf. Congratulations to all the prize winners!
Great Moments from the Tournament
Don't forget to check out the photo gallery for some of the great moments from the tournament, generously sponsored by Bosa Properties. A full photo gallery, including team photos, is now posted to seniors.nikkeiplace.org/golf and the NPF’s Facebook page.
Thank You to Our Sponsors!

Nikkei Youth Athletics Bursary Recipients Announced
Congratulations to Kenji Yamamoto and Max Hamanishi, our newest bursary recipients!
Nikkei Place Foundation is excited to award two inspiring young people with the Nikkei Youth Athletics Bursary! This $1,000 annual bursary recognizes the achievements of Canadian Nikkei youth student-athletes who foster excellence in sports, academics and community leadership.
“It is important that the Nikkei Place Foundation use our platform to recognize their achievements and look towards how we can continue to support the next generation in meaningful ways.”
– Naomi Kawamura, Executive Director
Congratulations to Kenji Yamamoto and Max Hamanishi, our newest bursary recipients! Their passion for sport and building healthy communities is admirable, and we wish them well in their future endeavors.
Kenji Yamamoto is a second year student at Douglas College, enrolled in the Bachelor of Physical Education and Coaching (BPEC) program. His passion for sports and physical activities developed from a young age. Throughout highschool he played basketball, volleyball, and rugby, but he loved soccer the most. During his time with the Cliff Avenue F.C., his team won many competitions and trophies, including Bronze in the B.C. division 1 league.
He grew up surrounded by great influences, which not only gave him an amazing childhood, but ultimately the passion to become a P.E. teacher. He aspires to be a role model for younger generations, to inspire and help them achieve their highest potential.
Max Hamanishi is currently an undergraduate student-athlete in the Sports Science program, majoring in Kinesiology at Douglas College. He is a varsity baseball player with the Douglas College Royals and has played baseball for 13 years. He was the bronze medal BC team pitcher in the 2017 and 2018 Little League Canadian Championships. Max was also a competitive swimmer for 10 years and competed at the BC provincials each year from 2016 to 2019.
Max studied at Gladstone Japanese Language School and Coquitlam Japanese Language Academy. He spends time volunteering in the community picking up litter on neighbourhood streets and shovelling snow and delivering meals to seniors. Max’s favourite Japanese foods are chirashi zushi and zenzai.
Thank you to all the applicants. We encourage eligible individuals and organizations to apply now for the next bursary.
