Make-A-Will Week: Estate & Legacy Planning Tools
遺言書作成週間 - 遺産による計画寄付の手引き
This week is B.C. Make-a-Will Week!
Make a Will Week is held by the BC government and runs from October 3-9 this year. Its purpose is to encourage the public to write their will or bring an existing will up-to-date.
In British Columbia, making a will just got even easier following legislative changes in August of 2020 that allow people who are in different locations to use technology to remotely witness a will.
DLA Piper provides a comprehensive explanation of Bill 21 here.
Confirmed by the BC government website, “starting December 1, 2021 changes will also give electronic wills the same recognition as physical wills. Wills soon will be able to be signed and stored electronically. While all formats of electronic will are acceptable, people are strongly encouraged to save their freshly made wills in PDF format, to make the probate process as easy as possible for their executor.”
This is a great time to start thinking about the future and the legacy you want to leave for the next generation. If you're unsure how to begin planning, or want to explore planned giving, we have created a number of resources to help. These resources are now available in both English and Japanese!
Making a will is an important part of life. It gives you the opportunity to leave instructions on how your estate will provide for your loved ones. It also gives you the opportunity to support the causes that are important to you and in so doing, have a lasting impact on the type of world you would like to pass on to future generations. It ensures your compassion for others can live on.
Writing your will is not the daunting task you think it may be. Making a will is a responsible step that everyone should take. It provides you with a sense of security knowing that your affairs are in order and the people and things you value have been taken care of.
Feel free to contact us at gifts@nikkeiplacefoundation.org if you have any questions.
You Inspire Us!
Thank you to all donors who answered the “Tech Tub Reboot” call for action. You inspire us and we thank you very much for assisting Nikkei Seniors Health Care & Housing Society in helping seniors.
Thank you to all donors who answered the “Tech Tub Reboot” call for action.
You inspire us and we thank you very much for assisting Nikkei Seniors Health Care & Housing Society in helping seniors. “Inspire Action” raised over $200,000, exceeding our $100,000 goal. Yes, you helped exceed the goal!
Your donation is at work now and will be put to work for their 2022 programs.
TUB – The Arjo Parker Series tub is now on order and expected to arrive in October. The renovation in the spa room begins September. Once it is completed, the residents will enjoy the experience of a warm soak while the staff can feel assured with all the safety features.
TECH – Nikkei Seniors is putting the ‘tech project’ to test. We recently upgraded our Internet WIFI connections; and purchased eight Echo devices for the residents’suites and to-go pocket WIFI-hot spots as needed. The Outreach Coordinator is now running programs – brain exercise, physical exercise, eating and chatting together, creating a link for a doctor to call in, and initiating a new kind of in-suite family visit. Once tested and the kinks resolved, we will offer more devices to residents. The long term goal is to start making this available to the seniors living at home. Our goal is to support “Better at Home.”
REBOOT – Iki Iki/Lively Lively (dementia friendly) and Kui Do Raku (Eat, Chat, Relax) have not started onsite (due to health restrictions) but they are in the rebooted and testing phase for an immediate start as soon as we get the ‘ok’ from the Fraser Health Authority. Part-time staff have been hired in the development, implementation, and sustainability of the reboot. These staff take the place of the volunteers who have not been permitted to work due to COVID restrictions. Volunteers have been a vital part of our programs and, as restrictions lift, our hope is for their return. In the meantime, the coordinators are maintaining contact with volunteers and seniors. This re-opening is what we have all been waiting for. For the seniors, new activities in familiar surroundings. “Let’s Go!” is our motto.
For the 2022 fiscal year, the planned outreach programs will happen as a result of your donation. Some of the funded activities are: dementia-friendly full-day programs; socialization programs; physical and brain exercise; tech connections for those who are unable to participate in person; plus film and documentary production and volunteer training and orientation.
Thank you all: you have been an inspiration. Kansha shimasu.

DREAM STATE - An evening of visual arts and ambient electronic music
All proceeds support Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre
Enter the Dream State, a setting temporarily separated from other realities through sound and vision.
Using projected light, the environment stimulates the eye and the movements of others affect your experience in the shared space. The music is unique, as if it is either from the distant future or distorted echoes of past dreams.
Dream State will be held in the spacious Nikkei Centre Events Hall, offering a place for guests to enjoy a comfortable seat, relax with a beverage from the bar, catch up with friends, and ponder among others lost and found in the Dream State. Tokyo street artist, Taka Sudo will showcase artwork for sale in our elegant lobby entrance to enjoy before entering the immersive environment created by Genki Nishida, also hailing from Tokyo. Ambient electronica played by Rennie Foster will fill the room throughout the evening, connecting guests to one another with music. At 9PM, a special LIVE analog modular synthesizer performance by The Passenger is sure to evoke intrigue and introspection.

Nikkei Matsuri Returns this Summer with Mini Matsuri – September 4 & 5, 2021
Mini Matsuri is just one of the many ways the NNMCC is working to fulfil its mission to honour, preserve, and share Japanese culture and Japanese Canadian history and heritage for a better Canada. All proceeds from Mini Matsuri will support the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre.
The Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre (NNMCC) is excited to bring “Mini Matsuri”, a scaled back version of Nikkei Matsuri, to the community on September 4 and 5, 2021.
Nikkei Matsuri is Burnaby’s authentic family-friendly Japanese festival. It is one of Canada’s largest Japanese festivals celebrating arts, culture and heritage, and has been bringing the community together at Nikkei Centre for the last 8 years. The NNMCC adapted to public health restrictions in 2020, and this year is no exception.
Mini Matsuri is about bringing a bit of the spirit of Nikkei Matsuri to Burnaby this summer. It’s a family-friendly event, set to feature some festival favourites such as a marketplace with local vendors and artisans, cultural performances, Japanese-style games, museum exhibits, and a variety of local eateries and food trucks. The NNMCC will adapt the Mini Matsuri experience to adhere to all public health restrictions – more details to come. Be sure to follow Nikkei Matsuri on social media or visit www.nikkeimatsuri.ca for the latest updates!
“Let’s re-connect with each other, and feel the community spirit while celebrating Japanese culture”
