Seniors at the Iki Iki Light program celebrate Hina Matsuri (Girls’ Day)
Iki Iki Light is an activity and social program offered by Nikkei Seniors Society for those living with dementia. During the program on February 26, seniors spent some time decorating paper hina dolls in honor of Hina Matsuri — a Japanese early-spring tradition of families wishing for the health and happiness of young girls in Japan. On the 2nd floor at Nimi Nikkei Home, the hina dolls are out on display in honour of this festival. Hina Matsuri is celebrated on March 3 of each year.
For the participants of Iki Iki Light, it is a wonderful way to connect to a traditional festival. The figures that are being decorated are the emperor and empress dolls which are placed at the top tiers, with other court members placed on the lower tiers. For all the volunteers who helped, we thank you very much for making this day a special one at Iki Iki Light.
Iki Iki Light is a recurring Wednesday program running from 10 am to 2 pm at Nimi Nikkei Home’s Kenko Wellness Lounge. It offers a variety of activities and lunch for seniors in a gentle and encouraging environment. Registration is required for this program - please contact Nikkei Seniors Society for more information.
We thank all the volunteers and donors who have made this program possible.

BURNABY, BC – Nikkei Place Foundation (NPF) is thrilled to announce that internationally renowned Nikkei architect Raymond Moriyama has been chosen as this year’s Thomas Shoyama Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. Moriyama will be presented with the award at their annual fundraising gala, the Thomas Shoyama Sakura Gala, on Saturday, April 4, 2020 at Coast Coal Harbour Hotel. Proceeds support Nikkei Place Foundation to strengthen, connect, and invest in the future of the Nikkei (Japanese Canadian) community.
The Thomas Shoyama Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes the achievements of outstanding individuals who have served as leaders in their fields and in the Japanese Canadian community. Previous awardees have included Dr. David Suzuki, Arthur Hara, Gordon Kadota, Henry Wakabayashi, Joy Kogawa, and Kaye Kaminishi (Asahi Baseball Team).
Raymond Moriyama has applied his visionary architectural approach to projects around the globe, including: Ottawa's City Hall, the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, the Saudi Arabian National Museum, and the Canadian War Museum, among others. During the Second World War, Raymond Moriyama and his family were interned in Slocan Valley and his experiences in the camp have informed his personal and professional career. Moriyama believes that "architecture has to be humane and its intent the pursuit of true ideals, of true democracy, of equality and of inclusion of all people."
He has received some of the highest professional honours including the Confederation of Canada Medal, and the RAIC Gold Medal. Moriyama has also received honourary degrees from ten Canadian universities, the Order of Canada, the Order of the Rising Sun, and the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal.
“The Thomas Shoyama Lifetime Achievement Award was created to honour Japanese Canadian heroes – to recognize the outstanding achievements of those who have made a profound and lasting mark on the fabric of Canada, and the inspiring legacy they give to future generations. It is with great excitement that we recognize Raymond Moriyama with this award at our upcoming gala.” said Naomi Kawamura, Executive Director at Nikkei Place Foundation.
The gala brings together community leaders, philanthropists, and business professionals to honour and celebrate the achievements of Nikkei in Canada. The evening’s agenda also includes the presentation of the 2019-2020 Nikkei Youth Athletics Bursary recipient (to be announced) and recognition of a Nikkei entrepreneur (to be announced).

TSUNAGU: Intergenerational Conversations
Be part of the conversation on Feb. 15! Tsunagu will open up a conversation between generations.
TSUNAGU: Intergenerational Conversations
Tsunagu will open up a conversation between generations. “Tsunagu” means to connect like a bridge to our shared history and experiences.
The mass incarceration of Japanese Canadians during the Second World War had an incalculable impact on our community and on the lives of all of those imprisoned. Most of the Issei who lost their life work are gone, but many Nisei who experienced the incarceration as children, youth and young adults are still often reluctant to share their experiences. The past is the past. Just look to the future. But what impact has this silence about their family history had on them, on Sansei, Yonsei and Gosei and on our community?
As this session is an intergenerational conversation, it is not so much a re-telling of family history, as it is about how each family TALKED about (or didn’t talk about) their history, especially with respect to the wartime uprooting and incarceration. And how they talked about it WITHIN the family, not so much to outsiders.
Event Details
Date/Time: Saturday, February 15, 2020 10 am - 4 pm
Fee: $25 plus tax and fees — Includes lunch and refreshments
Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Registration closes February 8.
Tsunagu will open with a presentation by Dr. Karen Kobayashi, Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies in the Faculty of Social Sciences, a Professor in the Department of Sociology, and a Research Affiliate at the Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health at the University of Victoria. She has published widely in the areas of family and intergenerational relationships, ethnicity and immigration, dementia and personhood, and health and social care. Karen is a Sansei who was born and raised in Toronto. Her grandparents and parents were interned in Lemon Creek and Bay Farm in the Slocan Valley. Karen has volunteered and worked for several Nikkei community organizations.
Karen's presentation will be followed by three moderated intergenerational conversations. Family panelists include Mary and Landon Kitagawa, Mike and Natsuki Abe, and Kevin and Kayla Isomura.
After a lunch break, we will show a short film by Connie Kadota and Lucy Komori about the experiences of Sansei and Yonsei . We'll then divide into table groups. As this session is an intergenerational conversation, it is not so much a re-telling of family history, as it is about how each family TALKED about (or didn’t talk about) their history, especially with respect to the wartime uprooting and incarceration. And how they talked about it WITHIN the family, not so much to outsiders.
Each table group will have a facilitator and note taker to capture the conversations. We'll regroup at the end and share highlights of discussions.
