Happy New Year: An Exciting 2020 Ahead
As we launch into our good work this year, we look forward to sharing with you some exciting new initiatives and upcoming events…
New Years Greetings from Our Executive Director
Dear Friends,
As the new year begins, the Foundation would first like to thank you for being a friend and supporter of Nikkei Place. We also hope that this message finds you and your loved ones well and ready for 2020!
As we launch into our good work this year, we look forward to sharing with you some exciting new initiatives and upcoming events that will be taking place here at Nikkei Place, including our annual Thomas Shoyama Sakura Gala on Saturday, April 4th and our annual Charity Golf Tournament taking place on May 29th!
Something that I am also particularly excited about is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre. Throughout the year, we will be sharing some of the stories of the many incredible people in our community who have helped to contribute to establishing Nikkei Place. We’ll also be launching an exciting new 2020 Campaign related to this anniversary, please stay tuned for more details.
And again, we want to thank you for supporting Nikkei Place and for being an integral part of our community. We hope to connect with you soon!
Warmly,
Naomi Kawamura
20 things to look forward to in 2020
As we approach the end of 2019, what we most appreciate about the upcoming year is…
Moving Foward & Changing Lives at Nikkei Place
As we approach the end of 2019, what we most appreciate about the upcoming year is a sense of hopefulness! In the Japanese tradition of “osouji”, many of us clean our homes to welcome in the new year. At Nikkei Place, we have also been looking at ways to welcome in change to improve the ways in which we operate.
Nikkei Place underwent some significant changes in 2019! The Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre (NNMCC) re-opened our now-named and newly expanded Karasawa Museum in July with our new exhibit, “Nikkei 日系”. We also said goodbye to Roger Lemire to welcome in Karah Goshinmon Foster as the new NNMCC Executive Director. The Nikkei Place Foundation (NPF) also brought on two new staff, Bobby Ruegamer and Mari Mikuni. Both NPF and Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society (NSHCHS) also launched new websites!
Building Community in 2020
Next year, NPF will be launching our 2020 Campaign “Building Community” in tandem with initiatives happening at the NNMCC and NSHCHS. Please join us throughout the year, as we celebrate the achievements of our diverse, strong and vibrant community!
The NNMCC will be celebrating twenty years of operations, since first opening its doors in Burnaby on September 22, 2000. Join us on September 5th & 6th to experience Japanese arts, culture and heritage at Nikkei Matsuri. Visit the Landscapes of Injustice traveling exhibit, the final stage of a 7-year project, developed in partnership with the Royal BC Museum the week of September 22nd! Celebrations will culminate at the 10th annual Nikkei Place Community Awards Dinner on October 24, 2020.
The NPF will be honouring a Nikkei community leader with the Thomas Shoyama Lifetime Achievement Award (to be announced) at our Thomas Shoyama Gala on April 4, 2020. We will also be launching a bilingual version of our Will Toolkit and offering a Kenko Talk education seminar about Planned Giving, in collaboration with NSHCHS.
The NSHCHS will be raising funds for our seniors at our Charity Golf Tournament on May 29, 2020 at Riverway Golf Course. We will also be offering our “Open Doors” programming, an initiative that makes several in-house programs of Nimi Nikkei Home available to the broader community. Some of these activities include ChairFit, Tea & Chat, and others still in development.
We are immensely grateful to our staff, volunteers, donors and supporters of Nikkei Place. Our continued success is due, in large part, to their efforts and generosity. Please consider making a gift to Nikkei Place today. Donations can be made online or by contacting the NPF office at 604.777.2122.

Catching Up With Beth: Environmental Issues, Grad School & The Value Of Sports
Beth was our first Nikkei Youth Athletics Bursary recipient! Here’s what she’s been up to…
“I am currently in my fourth year at Simon Fraser University. I am studying towards a Bachelor of Science in Physical Geography. I was previously studying earth sciences, but I decided to switch to physical geography because it has a larger focus on the environmental issues that we face today. I plan to finish my degree in the next year or so and then begin a masters program.
Since receiving the Nikkei Youth Athletics Bursary in 2016, I played senior womens softball for a few years but then decided to focus on work and school. I do plan to return to sports, whether it be coaching or playing, because I believe participating in athletic programs provides you with valuable skills and experiences that will continue to benefit you for the rest of your life.”

Catching Up with Dante: Engineering, Climate Change & Grad School
Our previous Nikkei Youth Athletics Bursary recipient Dante St. Prix is interested in developing technologies to counteract climate change, and continuing on to grad school.
It’s wonderful to hear from young Nikkei like Dante, who is working towards an exciting career in engineering, and in particular, being interested in joining the efforts to counteract our global climate change issues. We wish him all the best in his future!
Here’s what he has to say:
“In September, I started my 5th and final year of the Engineering Physics undergraduate program at UBC. For most of my degree, I focused on learning about electronics in addition to micro- and nano-technology. This was perfect since I had the opportunity to work with Microchip to validate complex electronic devices over the summer. It was exciting to combine my working knowledge with state of the art testing equipment to solve real world problems.
While I love this field, after much thought, I decided that climate change is a much more pressing issue and that I’m in a good position to shift toward developing technologies to counteract it – perhaps in fields such as energy production and distribution. I plan on spending the next year speaking to people in this field and will choose a graduate program that will best fit my goals.
As someone who loves travelling, I made sure not to miss any opportunities and visited, Japan, China, South Korea and Taiwan in between my work term and the new school year.”
