Nikkei Matsuri: Two Days of Family-Friendly Cultural Festivities
Join in on the festivities at Nikkei Matsuri on Sat. August 31 + Sun. Sept 1! Proceeds support Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre.
Nikkei Matsuri is One of the Largest Japanese Festivals in Canada!
It brings an authentic family-friendly “Matsuri” (festival) experience to Burnaby every summer at Nikkei Centre over the Labour Day weekend.
Hosted by the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre (NNMCC), this two-day festival on August 31 and September 1 has something for everyone, and aims to showcase the pride of Japanese culture here in Canada.
A matsuri (festival) has long been part of the cultural landscape in Japan. Many nikkei communities across North America and around the world carefully preserve and follow this tradition. Nikkei Matsuri provides a platform to celebrate Japanese culture through food, music, entertainment, games, and more.
The inaugural Nikkei Matsuri was held in 2013, and was originally organized by Nikkei Place Foundation, as a fundraiser for the NNMCC. The following summer, the organizing was handed over to the NNMCC, and has since become one of the biggest fundraising events of the year! All net proceeds benefit the NNMCC's cultural and community programs, educational outreach, and museum.

There’s plenty to see, do, and eat at Nikkei Matsuri!
Come join the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre over the Labour Day weekend to be immersed in an authentic Japanese festival in your very own community.
Enjoy delicious food offerings like manju, takoyaki, and ramen from local vendors.
Join in on the Matsuri Star Power: Spotlight Nikkei panel, and hear from Nikkei film and TV stars Tamlyn Tomita, Kevan Ohtsji, and Jennifer Spence.
Take in performances like taiko drumming and bon-odori dancing in the garden.
Play games and win prizes in the Games Zone!
See some amazing amateur talent at the Matsuri Star Talent Show in the event’s hall.
These are only some of the things to look forward to at the festival this year! Find out more at nikkeimatsuri.ca.
Get involved
If you are interested in getting involved, consider supporting Nikkei Matsuri as a sponsor or donor! You can have the chance to get your company or name showcased on the Lantern “Chochin” Wall display during the festival. Minister Tassi Visits with Seniors at Robert Nimi Nikkei Home
Nikkei Place Foundation recently received grant funding through the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP). The Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister of Seniors, got to see first-hand the positive impact that this grant will have in the lives of seniors at Nikkei Place
Nikkei Place Foundation recently received $24,000 in grant funding through the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP). Through the Nikkei Legacy Project, we will purchase recording equipment to conduct interviews with Japanese Canadian seniors, in order to document their knowledge and experiences about their history and origins.
On Monday, July 8, the Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister of Seniors, was welcomed on a visit to Robert Nimi Nikkei Home by Nikkei Legacy Project leader Naomi Kawamura, Executive Director at Nikkei Place Foundation, as well as partners at Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society, Cathy Makihara, Executive Director, and Ruth Coles, President of the Board. Her visit included meeting seniors, and sitting in on programs — seeing first-hand the positive impact that this grant will have in the lives of seniors at Nikkei Place.
"We continue to build on measures that will improve the lives of Canadian seniors. In Budget 2019 our government made key investments that will help seniors enjoy a smooth transition into a financially secure, healthy and socially inclusive retirement. Through the New Horizons for Seniors Program, we are taking more steps to empower seniors by supporting opportunities where they can benefit from and contribute to the quality of life in their communities."
– The Honourable Filomena Tassi, Minister of Seniors
Stay tuned for more information about the Nikkei Legacy Project.

This Year was the Best Yet: A Letter from the Nikkei Golf Committee
Helping Seniors Live Well
The Nikkei Place Charity Golf Tournament + Fundraising is run by Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society, in partnership with Nikkei Place Foundation. Since 2015, we have been helping raise vital funding specifically for dementia-friendly programs, awareness, and more, at Robert Nimi Nikkei Home and outreach into the surrounding Burnaby area and Vancouver. Find out more here about the huge impact sponsors and donors have made in the lives of seniors.
This Year was the Best Yet: A Letter from the Nikkei Golf Committee
To all our friends, sponsors, donors and volunteers,
Thank you for helping #BeatTheOdds at our Charity Golf Tournament on Friday, May 31, 2019!
It was great to see you on Friday, May 31, 2019 for our annual Charity Golf Tournament at Burnaby's Riverway Golf Course! YOU have helped make this our best year yet!
The 2019 Nikkei Golf Committee can't thank you enough for coming out and supporting this year’s event! What a spectacular day it was, and we hope you and your team enjoyed raising money for dementia friendly programs, awareness, and more, for the Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society.
We raised over $75,000 in net proceeds for dementia-friendly programs, awareness, and more!
We extend a special thank you to the City of Burnaby, and Riverway Golf Course! We are so grateful for their partnership and support in helping make this the best year yet!
As mentioned during the banquet, in addition to our "Iki-Iki" dementia programs, we also offer “Outfight Parkinson”, and are currently waiting for approval to start another boxing based exercise program for seniors. Program updates will be made available on the Nikkei Seniors Society's website.
Don't forget to check out the photo gallery for some of the great moments from the tournament here.
This year, we were also happy to welcome the support of media partner Global BC, and print media sponsor What's On! Burnaby.
It was an another amazing year with Global meteorologist Yvonne Schalle as our emcee, and former Canadian tour pro, RBC's Darren Wallace, for hitting it close on #15. On course, golfers were treated to goodies from All Nippon Airways, and refreshments from The Keg Steakhouse + Bar tent.
We would not be nearly as successful without the generosity from our sponsors. Thank you to our Executive Sponsors (Bosa Properties, Fujiya, and Leon Judah Blackmore Foundation) and our Premium Sponsors (The Keg Steakhouse + Bar, and ONNI Group), and Patrons (Ken Yada & Family, and Jane Nimi & Patty Ruegamer) for their support! Click here to see a full list.
Thank you again for your tremendous support and making this our 4th consecutive sell out!
Sincerely,
The 2019 Nikkei Golf Committee

What's 'Planned Giving' anyway?
Get the facts about what “planned giving” means and why you should consider it.
Planned Giving in a Nutshell
Simply put, “Planned Giving” means creating a charitable gift now that will go to a charity you care about in the future — usually once you pass away.
It’s “planned” because it is the type of gift that is designated in your Will, and involves both consideration of your financial situation, and preparation, usually with a lawyer and financial advisor.
Why should I consider Planned Giving?
Planned Giving can get you thinking about the future, and the legacy you will leave once you’re gone. You may start to ask yourself “What type of world do you want to pass on to future generations?” and “How do I want to be remembered?” .
Increased Impact
Making a planned gift in your Will gives you the opportunity to give the gift of a lifetime to a causes you believe in. It allows you to leave a larger gift that may not be possible during your lifetime, while still remaining in control of your assets. In doing so, you can make a lasting impact on the type of world you would like to pass on to future generations.
Tax Benefits
Because of Canada’s tax regulations, a planned gift may provide substantial tax relief for you now or for your estate later.
Some people believe that giving to a charity will diminish the amount they are able to leave to their kids and loved ones. However, because of Canada’s tax regulations, you can give money to a charity that would otherwise be given to Canada Revenue Agency in taxes.
Continued Goodwill
After providing for your loved ones, your Will enables you to continue to help others. When a charity receives a planned gift, it can allow them to use it for something special — something that would not be possible otherwise. It can ensure your compassion for others will live on.
A Legacy of Your Own
You will be remembered as someone who helps the Nikkei community preserve and share history, heritage, and culture for future generations, and a better Canada.
Get the Facts
Learn more about the benefits of making a planned gift by downloading our Planned Giving Factsheet to help you get started, or visit our Planned Giving page.

Featuring a New Core Exhibit:
Nikkei 日系
Pronunciation: nee-kay
Literal translation: of Japanese ancestry
Definition: anyone with one or more ancestors from Japan, and/or anyone who self-identifies as Nikkei (XI COPANI Eleventh Pan-American Nikkei Conference 2001).
The term Nikkei originated in Japan during the Meiji imperial restoration, beginning in 1868, to identify Japanese immigrants and their descendants residing in foreign countries. Today, it is widely used within the Japanese diaspora worldwide but often requires explanation outside of Japan where the label is most relevant.
More than 25 individual and family stories, accompanied by rare and previously inaccessible personal belongings from the community, give evidence to lived experience of Nikkei in Canada. Discover unique stories of arrival, heroism in the face of racism, the resilience of community, and the experience of generations through the intersections of migration, racism, identity, and belonging.
The core exhibit promises, over time, to rotate through a repository of over 30,000 photographs, 35 metres of textual records, 500 oral history recordings, 100 film reels, and over 2500 artefacts and artworks, which continues to grow with the tireless efforts of our archive and collections team.

Nikkei Museum Education Gets New “Journeys” Education Kits
New and improved “Journeys” Education Kits to Launch Fall 2019!
Two updated kits will bring Japanese Canadian history and heritage to classrooms nationwide, with direct connections to BC’s Curriculum.
New and improved “Journeys” Education Kits to Launch Fall 2019!
Two updated kits will bring Japanese Canadian history and heritage to classrooms nationwide, with direct connections to BC’s Curriculum.
Kits provide students with object-based, multimedia learning tools to interact with Japanese Canadian experiences during the Second World War through primary and secondary sources, including authentic and replica artifacts and archival materials.
New and improved “Journeys” Education Kits to Launch Fall 2019!
When BC’s new curriculum launched in 2016, the NNMCC education team knew that it was time to update the Taiken Field Trip program and Journeys Education Kits. Finally, we will replace five older kits with two new kits for the 2019/2020 school year, available for educators to rent from anywhere across Canada.
Kits include lesson plans that incorporate all aspects of the kit for both elementary and secondary school classrooms, yet remain flexible, allowing teachers to develop class-specific lessons utilizing kit resource. The kits can be re-imagined by educators to create hands-on activities in informal learning environments such as galleries, museums and cultural centres, particularly as a complimentary addition to NNMCC Travelling Exhibits.
Redevelopment of the Journeys Education Kits was curated by Nathalie Picard in conjunction with her Masters in Public History at Carleton University, and made possible by support from the Province of British Columbia, Metro Vancouver, British Columbia Arts Council, NNMCC Auxiliary Committee, the Frank H. Underhill Endowment, and the Landscapes of Injustice Project.
We acknowledge the financial assistance of the Province of British Columbia
Spring Update: Letter From Our Executive Director
Read a letter from Naomi Kawamura, our Executive Director, about what we’ve been up to this Spring, as well as what’s on the horizon.
Dear Friends of Nikkei Place,
It’s been an exciting spring so far at Nikkei Place – and there’s even more on the horizon!
In March, we celebrated Nikkei heroes at our annual Thomas Shoyama Gala, and raised funds for the Nikkei Place Foundation. On this night, we presented Kaye Kaminishi of the historic Vancouver Asahi baseball team with the Thomas Shoyama Lifetime Achievement Award, for helping bridge racial divides through the game of baseball. We also recognized Shig and Akemi Hirai (owners of Fujiya and other businesses) for over three decades of entrepreneurial success and their immense generosity to the community. I also had the pleasure to award the Foundation’s 2018-19 Nikkei Youth Bursary Award to the Shin-Asahi baseball team as they embarked on a tour of Japan (read all about their trip here!)
I am happy to share with you that the Nikkei Place Foundation was recently awarded a federal “Employment and Social Development Canada” grant, which will help fund projects aimed at expanding the social participation of seniors at our charity. Stay tuned for more information about this new initiative!
Other exciting things include the 14th annual Nikkei Place Charity Golf Tournament, which happened on May 31st in support of Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society, and the public re-opening of the Nikkei National Museum’s renovated space on July 20th (with free admission)!
What makes Nikkei Place is YOU
Since the founding of Nikkei Place, our community’s generosity has always been the backbone of Nikkei Place. Support from you and the rest of our community is what defines our past, our present, and our future. Giving to Nikkei Place Foundation means helping fund much-needed public programming, support and care for seniors, initiatives that inspire youth, and the extraordinary staff who make it all happen.
I invite you to stay tuned to our website for all the latest community updates. And if you haven't already received one in the mail, please check out our newest brochure to learn more about our core values, the many things that we are doing here at Nikkei Place, and what we aspire to do with the support of you and the community.
Please consider making a donation to the Nikkei Place Foundation today!
Warmly,
Naomi Kawamura
Executive Director, Nikkei Place Foundation
