Save the Date: Nikkei Place Charity Classic

Golf for Dementia on Friday, May 26, 2023

Nikkei Place Charity Classic returns to Beat the Odds of dementia on Fri. May 26!

The Nikkei Seniors Health Care & Housing Society is excited to bring back the 16th Annual Nikkei Place Charity Classic on Friday, May 26, 2023 at Riverway Golf Course in Burnaby! We return to a full tournament this year. Visit nikkeiplace.cbo.io for event details and updates.

All proceeds of our Charity Classic support our dementia-friendly programs, which provide social connections, education, and exercise for 60 seniors per week at Nikkei Place and through outreach within Burnaby and Vancouver.

In 2020, more than 597,000 Canadians were living with dementia1; by 2050, that number is expected to triple2. With an increase in people living with dementia, the need for supports will only grow.

Our goal this year is to raise $75,000 to fund our dementia-friendly programs in 2024, and grow our program capacity.

Join us for a fun-filled day out on the green with on-course contests, online silent auction, swag bag, raffle, bbq lunch, and 19th hole premium reception with canapés and prizes, and to-go bento! Space is limited. Click below to learn more or register today.

Iki Iki Light is an activity and social program offered by Nikkei Seniors Society for those living with dementia. During the program on February 26, seniors spent some time decorating paper hina dolls in honor of Hina Matsuri — a Japanese early-spring tradition of families wishing for the health and happiness of young girls in Japan. On the 2nd floor at Nimi Nikkei Home, the hina dolls are out on display in honour of this festival. Hina Matsuri is celebrated on March 3 of each year.

For the participants of Iki Iki Light, it is a wonderful way to connect to a traditional festival. The figures that are being decorated are the emperor and empress dolls which are placed at the top tiers, with other court members placed on the lower tiers. For all the volunteers who helped, we thank you very much for making this day a special one at Iki Iki Light.

Iki Iki Light is a recurring Wednesday program running from 10 am to 2 pm at Nimi Nikkei Home’s Kenko Wellness Lounge. It offers a variety of activities and lunch for seniors in a gentle and encouraging environment. Registration is required for this program - please contact Nikkei Seniors Society for more information.

We thank all the volunteers and donors who have made this program possible.

Helping Seniors Live Well

The Nikkei Place Charity Golf Tournament + Fundraising is run by Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society, in partnership with Nikkei Place Foundation. Since 2015, we have been helping raise vital funding specifically for dementia-friendly programs, awareness, and more, at Robert Nimi Nikkei Home and outreach into the surrounding Burnaby area and Vancouver. Find out more here about the huge impact sponsors and donors have made in the lives of seniors.

This Year was the Best Yet: A Letter from the Nikkei Golf Committee

To all our friends, sponsors, donors and volunteers,

Thank you for helping #BeatTheOdds at our Charity Golf Tournament on Friday, May 31, 2019!

It was great to see you on Friday, May 31, 2019 for our annual Charity Golf Tournament at Burnaby's Riverway Golf Course! YOU have helped make this our best year yet!

The 2019 Nikkei Golf Committee can't thank you enough for coming out and supporting this year’s event! What a spectacular day it was, and we hope you and your team enjoyed raising money for dementia friendly programs, awareness, and more, for the Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society.

We raised over $75,000 in net proceeds for dementia-friendly programs, awareness, and more!

We extend a special thank you to the City of Burnaby, and Riverway Golf Course! We are so grateful for their partnership and support in helping make this the best year yet!

As mentioned during the banquet, in addition to our "Iki-Iki" dementia programs, we also offer “Outfight Parkinson”, and are currently waiting for approval to start another boxing based exercise program for seniors. Program updates will be made available on the Nikkei Seniors Society's website.

Don't forget to check out the photo gallery for some of the great moments from the tournament here.

This year, we were also happy to welcome the support of media partner Global BC, and print media sponsor What's On! Burnaby.

It was an another amazing year with Global meteorologist Yvonne Schalle as our emcee, and former Canadian tour pro, RBC's Darren Wallace, for hitting it close on #15. On course, golfers were treated to goodies from All Nippon Airways, and refreshments from The Keg Steakhouse + Bar tent.

We would not be nearly as successful without the generosity from our sponsors. Thank you to our Executive Sponsors (Bosa Properties, Fujiya, and Leon Judah Blackmore Foundation) and our Premium Sponsors (The Keg Steakhouse + Bar, and ONNI Group), and Patrons (Ken Yada & Family, and Jane Nimi & Patty Ruegamer) for their support! Click here to see a full list.

Thank you again for your tremendous support and making this our 4th consecutive sell out!

Sincerely,

The 2019 Nikkei Golf Committee
Glenn Tanaka, Joey Oikawa, Ruth Coles, Cathy Makihara, Bobby Ruegamer, Jay Hiraga, Karen Tanaka, and Cheryl Wong
