Legacy Signage Project

The 75th Anniversary Legacy Signage Project is part of the mix of projects that commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Japanese Canadian internment experience. On April 1 2017, HeritageBC officially recognized 56 new BC historic sites nominated by the Japanese Canadian Historic Places Recognition Project as new entries in the official provincial registry of historic places in BC. This was the result of an intensive joint effort by the Japanese Canadian community and HeritageBC, the provincial body responsible for the registry.

Eight Highway Legacy Signs have been installed at provincially-recognized Internment Sites and Road Camps to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Internment. These Legacy Signs will provide a platform for local history education and Heritage Tourism.

The eight Internment Site Clusters and Road Camps commemorated by this project include:

  • Tashme

  • East Lillooet/McGillvray Falls/Calhoun Farm/Taylor Lake/Bridge River/Minto

  • Greenwood/Christina Lake/Midway/Grand Forks

  • Slocan Extension (Slocan/Popoff/Bay Farm/Lemon Creek)

  • Kaslo

  • New Denver/Rosebery/Sandon

  • Hope Princeton Road Camps

  • Revelstoke-Sicamous Road Camps

The success of the signage project is due to the BC government and the passionate committed community volunteers.

“They Went to War” Campaign

In 2014, commemorating the 100th anniversary of World War I, the Japanese Canadian War Memorial Committee with the Nikkei Place Foundation will fundraise $110,000 to restore the Cenotaph in Stanley Park, reproduce the Japanese Canadian Legion #9 flag, and replace of the plaque that dedicates the monument.

This iconic monument is a lasting memorial and testament to the ultimate sacrifice Japanese Canadians were willing to make for freedom and justice. It serves as a symbol for the battles fought for Canada and the fight for equal status amongst Canadians.

Thank you for helping answer the call to preserve the memory of these Japanese Canadian heroes.

Whenever the call of duty sounded, young Japanese Canadian men answered that call. They fought for Canada, and they also fought for Japanese Canadians, in the hope
of gaining equal rights. It was the veterans who led the charge in gaining the franchise in
1931 and 1948. These brave young volunteers fought battles that helped define Canada as a nation on the world stage and were witness to some of the fiercest combat and highest casualty rates fought in various theatres of war. Japanese Canadians stood shoulder-to-shoulder with fellow Canadian soldiers and sacrificed their lives together.
Today, we remember the battles fought for us and we will share their legacy with future generations through the cenotaph in Stanley Park.

Thank you for helping answer the call to preserve the memory of these Japanese Canadian heroes. It is the least we can do for the these young men who made the ultimate sacrifice for Canada and for us. May they the rest in peace.

Nikkei Fishermen’s Legacy Challenge

From the bustling docks of Steveston to remote inlets on the northern coast, Japanese Canadians made many unique contributions to commercial fishing in British Columbia, both pre- and post-war. With pride and perseverance, the Nikkei fishing community proved themselves as highly skilled and hard-working fishermen and cannery workers and built a new life as Canadian citizens.

The Nikkei Fishermen’s Legacy Challenge was initiated to raise funds to support the preservation of Nikkei (Japanese Canadian) culture in B.C — to help preserve the legacy of our Nikkei fishing pioneers. Their families were invited to make monetary contributions to the fund to help protect and maintain the history of Japanese Canadians in the fishing industry.

Over $80,000 was raised for this project, of which $10,000 was donated to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society, a non-profit charity who works to preserve the history of West Coast fishing. The remainder was donated to the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre.

A permanent etched plaque remains on display at Nikkei Centre to commemorate all the Nikkei (Japanese Canadian) fishermen who fished in the coastal waters of British Columbia. Their courage, perseverance, and indomitable spirit in the face of physical, economic, and social challenges will always be remembered. The fishermen and their boats on this plaque are those of the more than 4,000 Nikkei who made a significant contribution to the commercial fishing industry of British Columbia.
