Mission & Values

Nikkei Place Foundation is a registered charity established in 2002. Our unique community-within-the-community at Nikkei Place - a purpose-built cultural complex - comprises two other integral pillars: Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre, and Nikkei Seniors Health Care & Housing Society. These organizations play a crucial role in shaping the future of our community through enriching cultural programs for all ages and affordable care for seniors.

The Nikkei Place Foundation stands as the cornerstone, ensuring operational sustainability of the two organizations into the future. This vital role is made possible through the generosity of our donors who have built the Legacy Endowment Fund and supported the activities of the organizations.

Our mission at Nikkei Place Foundation is to ensure the future of Nikkei Place — a unique campus that not only shares the history, heritage and culture of the Nikkei (Japanese Canadian) community through diverse programs, events, and exhibits, but also supports the care of seniors.

We honour our Japanese Canadian community’s legacies and believe it is important to inspire the potential of the next generation.

Together we can change lives and shape our community for the better.

Nikkei Place

Nikkei Place is a campus of three non-profit organizations working collectively for the good of our local, national, and international Canadian and “Nikkei” (Japanese ancestry) communities:

  1. Nikkei Place Foundation (NPF)

  2. Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre (NNMCC)

  3. Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society (NSHCHS).

Together, our mandates support children, new immigrants, and seniors with engaging programs, activities, events and services.

We respectfully acknowledge that Nikkei Place is located on the traditional, unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples, including the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

I’ve learned a lot through being involved here at Nikkei Place — whether it be about the internment, Japanese culture in general, or my family’s history… people need to come here to appreciate all that happens here, to see that we have a great facility with lots of interesting programs, and that we have a caring place for elderly people to live.
